Port Lighting Study Case
New Perspectives and Innovations in Nature Conservation
13.6.2023
We have received funding from Business Finland’s Tempo program for a project in which we extensively investigate the challenges posed by port area lighting to wildlife and nature. We specifically focus on the possibilities of LED lighting to support the ecosystems of port areas.
Did you know that artificial light can have harmful effects on the environment in ports? It can disrupt the natural rhythms of animals and interfere with maritime traffic. However, light is also essential for enabling round-the-clock operations in port areas.
Through our Tempo project, we aim to find a balance between the adverse effects of artificial light and the functional needs of the area. Our goal is to develop an energy-efficient, ecological, and safe lighting system that leverages the latest LED technology.
One key aspect of our project is the design of luminaires, control of color temperature, and automated dimming. These factors allow us to create a secure working environment for employees and a more natural habitat for the organisms in the port area.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has been involved in our project so far. Together, we can create more sustainable and nature-respecting solutions for port area lighting.
Our report, which comprehensively covers information about port lighting, can be downloaded from our website. There, you will find additional information about our project and its progress. Downloading does not require providing an email address.
Follow us and stay updated on the progress of our project. We are excited about upcoming research results and the pilot phase!
